Welcome to Kittiwake

A family home with fishing roots.

Kittiwake is the large home of a local fishing family in Inner Hope. Sue and Dave live in one small part of the house, while guests have the greater part to themselves, with their own entrance, living space and kitchen. It sits in the valley leading to Bolberry, a few minutes' walk from the beach, the thatched cottages of the square and the cliff paths. Outer Hope, with its shop, is just across the beach.

A home, not a corporate let

Your hosts,
Sue and Dave

Sue is a local artist and basketmaker who runs occasional workshops on making traditional willow crab pots and baskets. Dave is the last full-time working crab fisherman living in Hope Cove. Crabs and lobsters are available to order, weather permitting.

Guests have sole use of the front door and their own keys. We use a side door and can be completely separate, so you can see as much or as little of us as you wish, and we are always happy to share local knowledge.

Willow work with Sue

Baskets and crab pots,
made the old way

Sue is a basketmaker, and willow is at the heart of her work. Known locally as withy, it is cut, sorted and soaked until supple, then woven entirely by hand into baskets that are made to be used and to last.

She also makes traditional willow crab pots, using age-old techniques handed down through generations of fishing families on this coast. Long before wire and plastic, every pot that went to sea from coves like this one was woven from withies, and the skill of making them is now a rare one. In a house where crab fishing is still the family trade, it is a craft that feels very much at home.

If you would like to try it for yourself, courses in basket making and willow crab pot making can be arranged on request. Whether you are a complete beginner or have woven before, Sue will guide you through each stage, and you go home with something you have made with your own hands. It is a lovely way to spend part of your stay, and a piece of Hope Cove to take away with you.

Hope Cove and around

Inner Hope,
shaped by the sea.

Inner Hope is the traditional heart of the village, with its square of thatched cottages, coastguard cottages, lifeboat stations and Fishermen's Reading Room. The sheltered valley leads to a safe, family-friendly beach with good sand, rock pools and some surf, ideal for kayaks, paddle boards and small boats, with slipways on both sides of the cove.
